Well, I went to a larger EE store closer to home on Saturday and they also said the same thing - that there is no way they could get the EE card to work in the phone without it being unlocked and that I'd have to buy an orange SIM for it to work etc etc etc but because EE, Orange and T-Mobile are three different networks there is no obligation from one to unlock the phone so it can work with one of the others. I wasn't in the mood to argue on Saturday morning so took the phone to a little shop in town and had it unlocked for £15 so at least I now have a working phone

but I will be writing a letter to EE / Orange - but am not holding my breath about the outcome

Ria, I have been looking at this because I was moved from Vodafone to EE when I got my Sony Xperia. I still had credit on my Voda SIM and wanted to burn it off before using the EE one. The guy in Phones4u ,where I got the Sony, told me it was already SIM free and available to all UK networks. He did, however, say that had I got the Sony tied to a network I would have to pay to unlock it. That seemed fair as I was going from EE to Vodafone, not within EE. I was also fortunate that my old Samsung slider was unlocked. It accepted the EE SIM to keep their network active till I had used up the Vodafone credit in the Sony.

Having read around it looks as though EE is hiding behind some sort of legalese. At one level EE, Orange, T-Mobile are one company, yet on another level they are not.

£15 to unlock a phone isn't too bad, and I bet it was done in the time taken to drink a coffee.

they said 20 mins Frank so really not bad at all. But I was kind to them and gave them ample time because Nadine and I treated ourselves to lunch and a bottle of bubbles ;) and one can't rush that you see
