Yes my dad used to have it first with gravy when he was young, it was just to fill them up so they'd eat less meat, especially during the war.

Hated gravy when I was little so I had my Yorkies as a starter with a splash of milk and sugar, then my lunch (meat and veg, no gravy) on the same plate Personally I don't mind chips with lasagne although I do find them a bit filling....on our weekly order for Chinese tonight we always order one meal with fried rice and one with chips, and share both
