I always seem to be asking for vibes

Postby Osc » 19 May 2014, 19:56

This evening, Michael had a reaction to a cashew nut (he has been tested for nuts before but it was negative :( ). They gave him Zirtek and then an emergency dash to the doctor, who gave him steriods and he is to have more tomorrow. The throat and tongue went down but he has been wheezy, a body rash has come up and his hands are a bit swollen, well that was the state of play about 1½ hours ago. The doctor said if it got worse, to go to A&E but I can only assume that they are happy enough with how he is as I haven't had an update. He does have other allergies, fish and eggs, but doc suggested he be tested again for nuts.

As a follow on - how come children are allergic to so much these days? I know this is a real old lady question, but I never remember allergies featuring so much when I was a child - I had hayfever as did one of my friends, but that was about the height of it.

I'll let you know if I hear anything more.

Oh vibes the little lad will be ok. xx

I agree - there does seem to be more 'things' that children are allergic to these days.

I see alot of my friends with grandchildren who constantly seem to have to steer clear of this, that or the other. :?

Must be a worry though. x

Oh poor little lad, it does sound as though he is definitely allergic :(

My 'take' on the amount of allergies around these days is that there is just so much 'crap' in the atmosphere, in the water, so many pollutants that generally our immune systems have to work much harder all the time than they were designed for - and it tips over the edge into allergies much more often!

I have a faur few allergies myself so I do very much sympathise xxxxxx

I have some as well, Kaz, as has SIL, and I agree with what you say about possible causes, and I would add in food additives as well.

He seems to be ok at least no worse, although the rash is still there and at last text exchange half an hour ago, he was still awake and on the couch beside them. Last time he had a reaction to something, the rash lasted for ages and this reaction was a lot worse, so it could take a while going down. Don't know how Miss Osc and SIL will manage to get some sleep tonight, I know I'll be awake worrying.

Child allergies are always worrying things, and I can understand your concern.

I'm sending some special vibes over.

That's the way life goes Osc, sometimes vibes are needed months in a row, sometimes all at once, but then hopefully none at all for ages :)

It's very frightening, especially when you are first dealing with it, remember little Miss Weka who was dreadfully allergic to all sorts, but thankfully seems to have mainly outgrown them.
Next door's little boy has an extremely severe allergy to nuts (including a kiss from someone who had eaten a walnut, and being in a room with carrot cake with walnuts on top) and has to have an epi-pen wherever he goes.

Hmm, several ideas, but nothing concrete. Food ingredients now certainly often include things like peanuts, in oil or otherwise.
Mainly I think it's the diversity of food children are now exposed to, and it's often questionable as to what they may contain. Would you have eaten a cashew nut at four? It's just not something many of us would have been exposed to, but if we had, maybe as children we'd have been allergic. Peanuts and peanut butter were not so common either. And we didn't generally eat out, food was very simple, mostly indigenous produce.
