I remember "Antussin" cough mixture! Blimey, it tasted foul. I used to prefer Buttercup Syrup - it wasn't as effective but it tasted a whole lot better!

Dad had been a fisherman before the war and used to have this tincture made up by the local chemists. It was a brown sludge that smelled of cloves, menthol, aniseed and coal tar and had a kick like a Mule. We kids would get better in record time.... for fear of having to have a second dose.

Rosehip syrup - anyone remember that? My mum used to give my sister and I a spoonful every day in the winter :)

I guess my life was pretty normal. Apart form the fact that my mum made soup with every leftover that could be used for soup, the only thing I really remember being different was the aspirin chewing gum the RAF sick quarters used to hand out to children. Never seen it since I became an adult and it was one of those different things.

Although, now it comes to mind, during the bread strike, my dad brewed ginger beer to grow yeast and my mum made the bread from it. Interesting taste....
