I'm going on a course...

...on Saturday morning.

It's a four hour course dealing with spotting dyslexia in students and also how to help students who wear hearing aid appliances.

I will find this particularly useful as out of the 80 odd students I teach 4 wear hearing aids - I always make sure they sit right next to me at the table and I look at them full on when I'm talking but have always wondered what they miss when I'm at the blackboard for instance and my back is turned to them for a while.

There will be a short exam at the end.

Myself and the other teachers are then going out for lunch.

Best go easy on the Friday night beers.

that sounds like a fab course Ally. Too many people struggle through life because they are undiagnosed dyslexic. It's finally something that is being understood and can be worked with; going on this course is going to potentially make a huge change for some kids.

And the same goes for the kids with the hearing aids - they'll get so much benefit from it

One thing I remember from teacher/trainer training is 'Do not speak to the wall (blackboard, whiteboard, flip-chart) speak to the room'. It still bugs me no end when the likes of weather presenters turn away from the camera and talk about this low coming in from here and this high doing this.

We don't speak to the blackboard either WM - but I am always aware that a few words can and might get missed which is why I'm really looking forward to the course to glean any useful tips that may help.

That sounds great!!!! Mick is dyslexic, but luckily for him he works with numbers and codes and it doesn't affect his work. He needs spellcheck or me to proofread for him though, sometimes, outside work....

Oddly, I've never known any child having to wear hearing aids -
I thought it was only mature people like me who had that need.

I do agree that that it is important to look at anyone when talking to them.

The art of speaking correctly seems to have gone in today's world. A lot of actors today
mumble their word and talk much too fast. I was always told that when talking you should
listen carefully to yourself, so that you hear exactly what your audience is hearing.

You are never too old to learn.
Will you be able to take notes so that you can refer to them in the future.
Once went on a course. The first lecturere after lunch was showing slides-before computers. His fourth one was a scantilly clad young lady. He said that was to make sure we were all still awake!!
On our cruise we wet a couple who had their 23 year old son with them. He had epipepsy and some othet medical condition which I can't remember. Got it after he had the MMr jab when he was three.
His father showed us some photos of paintings and drawings he had done. It included an exact free hand copy of one of Van Gogh's paintings. Art colleges won't accept him as he cannot do the academic parts of the course.
So brilliant in one part but need constant help in others.
