Hello from Malta!

Postby Osc » 08 Nov 2014, 21:31

Evening all! Arrived in Malta Thursday night to strong winds and driving rain :o :( Our hotel is more than fine, especially considering what we paid for the week. We did get a bit of a fright when we came down to reception yesterday to use the free wifi to find about 100 Italian teenagers checking in   - the noise level was shocking! However our fears of a sleepless night were not realised thank goodness. We had lots of showers when we were wandering around yesterday morning and finally it settled in to steady rain afternoon and evening, but that was fine, we read our books and relaxed. Today we went to Valetta, beautiful city, did plenty of walking around. There were a couple of showers but otherwise it was nice.

Bus fares are very cheap so then we went to a place called Qawra to suss out a hotel that has dancing on Monday and Wednesday nights - a useful exercise as it will be dark going there on Monday and now we know where to get off the bus. Didn't like the area though, or the hotel, but hopefully the dancing will be good.

Had a meal in a restaurant serving Maltese food this evening, very nice, a lot of Italian influence. Apparently the cooler wetter weather is unusual (typical  ) but tomorrow is supposed to be nice and in fairness, we didn't come looking for a sun holiday. Glad to see Ally, Di and Bb had a lot of fun yesterday!

Have a great break Rosie I liked Malta but Kath isn't keen on going back .

On our first day at 9 am we hired a car, it was brand new only 16 miles on the clock, by 12.30 someone a local, had run in the back of us at a roundabout I was stopped he wasn't paying attention, he admitted his fault and called the police and car hire for us on his mobile, we got collected and they gave me another new car this only had 12 miles on it, eeeeeek.

When returning the car at the end of our two weeks it had almost 1,000 miles on and they told us the first one had been written off and was to be replaced with a new vehicle, they were not in the least bothered.

Apart from that and two days raining and the biggest thunder and lightning storm for 30 years they had had it was a lovely break.

Hope you enjoy it and come back safely.

Glad you're having a lovely time Osc, despite the weather.

Try Marsascala and Mdina too, both lovely places. If you can, get over to Gozo - it's so different from Malta. You can get the ferry across.

But mostly, just have fun and enjoy xx :D :D

Waves to Rosie, good to know that it is going well, at least the rain is warm rain. :P ;)

We had a week there when the children were very small and it was so relaxing just to wander about, sit on sea walls, plenty of those about, and visit cafes - the children were always made welcome.

A trip over to Gozo and a bus ride up to Victoria is worth a day out.

Glad yu're having a good break Osc!

We stayed in Bugibba back in 2001, just a bit further round the bay to Qawra....the hotel was only a three star but we had a great time, I think a holiday is what you make it :D Enjoy the dancing ;)

Have to admire you for going in the bus - I remember being terrified as they were packed to the rafters and the drivers over there just don't care about rules of the road! To say I would prefer to return from a trip to Melleia Bay to Bugibba by speed boat than face a return bus journey (and me with my fear of water!) speak volumes
