.... what exactly is a "stovie" ?

I understand that it's a delicacy sold at Scottish soccer matches - but is it just a meat pie, or is it some sort of stew?

It is funny you should ask this question………we were talking about stovies last night with friends :D

Yes it is a stew. My Mum used to make it in neat layers of meat, onion, potato and stock but the recipe I have found just seems to chuck it all in. I think Mum made it in a pressure cooker which could explain why it was still in neat layers when she served it…..she couldn't get in the pot to stir it about. :D

There's many variations of the dish.

Every variation contains potatoes but, depending on who is making it, it can contain corned beef or link sausages or square sausages or mince! When I was a kid and we had stovies it had mince, potatoes, carrot and onion all cooked in the one pot. many people though would tell you that onions should never be part of a stovie dish.
Lol, I don't know if it is a true definition but to my mind it is basically a mix of food all combined together.

The bit about cooking in layers in a pot sounds a bit like Irish Stew.

Thanks all, (and thanks for that link, Molly, which mentions they get served at rugby / soccer matches). Certainly looks very nice as a winter warmer!

I was wondering what they serve stovies in at these games - presumably polystyrene containers with a plastic fork ..... down here, they rarely stray beyond burgers and chips at my local grounds, although Barwell FC do a gorgeous chicken curry for £3.50 and Tividale FC have been known to sell hot slabs of bread puddin' for 50p ... I think I spent more time at the hatch the day I went there than watching the match! :lol: :lol: :lol:

Granddad was Scottish and grandma was Irish, as was mum, so we always had potatoes in. :lol: :lol:

The version we had was usually made from some Sunday leftovers but with fresh potatoes and onion. It was not like a stew or casserole as the fluid was the minimum needed cook the spuds and onions.

My dad came from Lancshire, and his favorite dish was Panackelty a casseroled dish consisting of meat (usually corned beef) and root vegetables (mainly potatoes and onions) left to bake throughout the day in an oven pot on low heat. We often had it, but I've not had it since leaving home.
