:D Aggers thanks for letting me know, I thought I was going bonkers  There is nothing wrong with being particular - my own particular bugbears are apostrophes in the wrong place and 'bored of' instead of 'with' ;)  xxxx

I've got an ancient OED in the bookcase in Mick's study, had it since school, all the first year Ashford Grammar pupils were given one :)

Not maybe what everyone would appreciate but he sure did :D
He does the Times crossword, quizzes, whatever, and didn't own a dictionary.

It doesn't get used much now though, it's too heavy for me anyway and we both use the Oxford that was already installed on our kindles ;)

I guess pronunciation evolves just as the rest of the language does :)

Another reason I love you Di.

The first weekend Don and I moved to London - our first Islington flat warming present to each other was a big fat Chambers dictionary bought on Tottenham Court Road. :D :D

We still have said dictionary which is dog-eared and battered but very much loved. :D

It's also the dictionary (we have quite a few) that the boys would turn to after asking me..."mum, how do you spell...?" and my stock reply, just like MY mum said to me was...look in the dictionary.

Fancy that! :D
I bet other people thought you peculiar too
His is very fally-apart but no chance it will ever be got rid of ;)

Noooooo, that's plain wrong!

Perhaps, now that I've mentioned it, you may notice how many people do it.

You will be surprised.

Rant.

"up to" when a number is unknown...... there were up to 50,000 protesters. What if another joins in? Do you mean "about" or approximately"?
"going forward" instead of "in the future".
"would" instead of "will" as in "I would ask people to be vigilant" Would you? Then get on and ask them..... "I will ask people to be vigilant" or "I am asking peoople to be vigilant".

Rant over.

A dot above a capital I? Why on earth would you do that?

Now, child asking a parent for water, is it, may I please have some water, or, could I have some water.

(Weka who determined to drag these kids 8-) up right)

Thank you. :) the please at the front makes more sense. I notice at the end it comes after some considerable pause.

I don't know why, but a lot of people do - not only when writing but even, sometimes, on semi=permanent painted notices.

That reminds me of when my mother told me about when she tried to get me to ask properly when a young child.
She said, "Don't say Please can I have a drink, say Please may. So I said, 'Please may, can I have a drink'.
This brought the house down, because it so happened that her second Christian name was May.
