Success....

Earlier this week I finally got the radiator in the back bedroom reconnected. It's an old one that I fitted and the joint was loose to the radiator and I had to isolate it.

So it took a few days but that room is now up to the same temperature as the rest of the house. Something we haven't seen before. This morning it's -4 outside. It was -4 at 11pm last night. The boiler is out as I finally worked out what all the cleaning tools do and the boiler was roaring away last night burning logs at a fast rate.

So with the boiler out, the temp outside at -4, it's warm. The attic level, which has no heating at all is cool but comfortable for bedrooms. I'm still struggling to keep the boiler down under 100c when it's burning but that's a good thing as we have the hot water and another house next door to heat. The goal was to get a boiler which could do it all and that was a good decision (especially as buying and fitting was £5,000), however it does cause issues such as when it was not burning too well and I dumped a layer of coal plus fast burning wood on it to fill it up and found, 1 hour later, that it was off the scale (at least 150c) and the radiators were dangerous to touch....

I'm calling it a success even though I still need some more time working out the circulation, some radiators partially shut down when it gets too hot....

On a ferry today, Mrs S is heading to get her teeth done. I'll be home on Sunday.

Anon.

Suff, When I was young, we used to have open fires. Had a plentiful supply of logs. Used to enjoy watching the different colours of the flames as they burnt.
Used to saw the logs using a two handed cross cut saw. It kept you fir doing it for about asnhour with only a short break to load a new trunk onto the saw horse.

Temps here have been below zero, day and night, since Sunday.

Don't know what sort of system you have Suff. Mine is a two pipe ring - out/in - which makes individual radiator control easier and more accurate.

Just saying... in case you have one of these modern on pipe jobs.

Hi WM,

I have created a two pipe ring with spurs off for the radiators. It's all controlled by temp controllers on all the radiators...

We're back, it's just over freezing and the house was not bad. Boiler is going again and will kick the pump in soon. The house will be warm in the next 2 hours or so...

Nice to be back. Interesting drive, both out and back. Although Mrs S thinks is was a nightmare....

Saw 2 gritters in the UK. Both were in a parking bay. We drove from Portsmouth, in a snow storm, to Luton and then back into London. Yesterday we drove from London back to Portsmouth.

Today we drove from Caen home. We saw 25 gritters on the route....

ALL the French roads were open and we had nearly 4 inches of snow in places.....
