I'm proud of you too. Age has nothing to do with it. It is mainly time put off and willingness to learn. There is no end of information out there on the net if you want to learn but you have to put the time off to learn the language of computing. It is really a language and that's why children become so proficient so fast. They are already learning one language so why should another be so hard?
I'm so proud of my father. He hardly ever touched a computer before he was 50. I bought him a used PC from the Royal Bank of Scotland back in 93 and started teaching him how to use Windows3.1 and DOS. He wrote down every thing I taught him. I'm sure that when my brother and I finally have to help clear out his things when he's gone, I'll find the books with the things I taught him, still written, never disgarded.
Today my father is 78. When, not if, the desktop PC is too old and too slow, he will go and look around for parts, he'll get a shopping list together then talk to me. We'll agree what he needs and he will order it then he will build his own PC and migrate his apps and data. If he has an issue he'll call me and I'll teach him, not tell him, how to resolve it. However I don't expect him to have an issue as he's now replaced the main PC twice, the processor and memory on one of the Laptops, the hard drive on both laptops and his operating systems multiple times.
My brother treats him as an idiot who has to have everything done for him. It's so frustrating.
My Mother, on the other hand, is more capable than my father yet less interested. My mother used to be a RAF radar technician before she married. At Christmas last year she arrived with a nexus 7 which my brother had insisted she bought. In 5 minutes I showed her several things to make her life easier and also how to find the other things she needed to know. She hadn't experimented and was doing things in the most horrible way for the previous 6 months.
No interest. My mother is 76.
So Lissie, carry on, it's fun if you enjoy it.
