Email problem

Postby cruiser2 » 16 Oct 2014, 18:36

I am with TT use Firefox and W8.
Yesterday started having problems getting onto the internet and receiving emails. So after two phone calls to TT, decided to switch everything off including my router.
This morning, after a long phone call with TT have now got the internet connection back.
But one of my TT email accounts is not showing emails which have been sent to me, either by other people or myself from other email address one of which is Hotmail.
TT have said that the problem is being investigated by their top technical department.
No other problem getting onto websites since switching back on this morning.
Any help much appreciated.

If the mail is not visible in the server, there are a few possibilities.

1. Their internal routing servers are storing the mail because they can't send it on (performance issues or addressing issues)
2. The spam settings are black holing all mail and rejecting it without sending a response to the sender
3. The mail is there but the server is not presenting it in the view, either due to a corrupted mailbox or web server issues. There is a lot of technology behind the website including databases.

Now you have raised a call they should be able to send mail to the mailbox and trace it to find out what is happening. Should be sorted in a few days to a week. Well if they are half way competent that is.

Have had another phone call to TT. this morning to one of the senior tech sections.
Been told that all TT emails will be transferred to webmail very soon. This may be causing the problem. But can't understand why it is not affecting my other TT email accounts which are still working as before.
Not really happy with the change but will have to live with it.

By the sound of the response, it seems that it's probably configuration. This account will have a setting which has not bee set to enable the webmail. They will have to set the setting then force all the mail over.

The good point is they know where the mail is and what the problem is.

You would probably find that if you set up a Pop3 client you could pull the mail you can't see in webmail.

[edit]

You can actually see the pop3 mails waiting by hand if you know the commands. It can be done from a command prompt with telnet.

Cruiser, you might have heard of Thunderbird or Outlook with reference to e-mail. They are pop3 clients as well as many other things. They allow you to download copies of your e-mails from the web to your own computer(s) without you having to have a browser open, and they can be configured to do the downloads at intervals so that you miss nothing.

Have a look at Essential PIM I use this because it is free and works with W7, 8 and 8.1. It can also be put on a USB stick so that you can download your e-mails anywhere even if you dont have your laptop/smartphone/tablet with you. It handles multiple accounts, I have three from different places, and it can download for them all simultaneously. There is a calendar, notes, to-do and contacts list as well as e-mail.

It might not be what you want, but if you want a client it is worth looking at. E-mail providers on the web can come and go or change and if you have not downloaded your emails you can lose them.

A POP3 client is a mail client like Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird which can read the mail server on what is called the Post Office Protocol (version3). Unlike the webmail server, which must read and present the mail in a different format, often on another server, POP3 is a direct view of the mail server.

As Yahoo now only supports SSL, I had to use OpenSSL to have a look at my mailbox by hand in the command prompt. It is possible to do this without installing any mail program. This is, after all, what they do programmatically.

What you see below is me logging into the POP3 mailbox, showing how many mails are there (20,231 mails of 1.25Gb of data) and then retrieving one of those mail messages which appears to be someone trying to get me interested in a job...

The stat command just tells me what the opening screen told me, however it's needed for when you download and delete mails.

This is geek territory but not actually difficult to do. I'm just following command lines off the web as I've long forgotten how to do this.

I used to have a script which opened the catchall (junk), mail area of my business account and deleted all mail there. I think I'll go set it up again with OpenSSL. Been a while and it must have gigabytes of garbage in there.

openssl s_client -connect pop.bizmail.yahoo.com:995 -quiet

C:\PROGRA~2\OpenSSL-Win64\bin>openssl s_client -connect pop.bizmail.yahoo.com:995 -quiet
