most supermarkets here pack your bags. I load up on the conveyor belt roughly how i want it packed. mostly it works.
we have another supermarket here called pack n save. as per the name, you pack your bags, and it's suppose to be cheaper. when I go there, I load up on the conveyor as per normal, and they are suppose to then pack it into a trolley, where you then push the trolley to a packing table where there are random boxes your can use or you use your own bags. Only after my UK practise, I can now pack as fast as they can scan, so i put the big heavy stuff on first ( as I wont bag that) then as per normal. Then I have to teach them about what i'm going to do, and they then scan it and leave it on the teeny tiny bit of desk beside their scanner, so i have to be fast. Upshot is, their back is saved, mine is saved, and I'm faster than normal through. I always get the operators saying they wished more people would do that.
Everything happens for a reason

..... and what I don't like is when the supermarket check-out lass, having rung up your 2 x packs of 12 cartons of 1 litre UHT skimmed milk, helpfully informs you that if you had purchased 4 x packs of 6, you'd have saved £2.40 .......

That annoys me when it's the person in front of me being told, who then decides that they'll take up the offer thank you very much so either they run off to get the extras or a runner is summoned who then trots off up the shop only to be stopped by customers or staff with queries as they go  :x

Oh I'm always glad when they tell me Jo, I'm afraid if it causes a bit of a delay that's just rotten luck   Although to be fair I am fairly laid back if it happens in front of me  ;)

Ossie what a pain!!! :(

It's happened to me a few times, but mostly I always compare the £/weight /litre etc pricing and then work out the cost from there. If it's something you don't usually do then start - you would be surprised how the £/per whatever unit it is changes depending on the size of whatever it is you're buying. Bigger / bulk isn't always cheaper

That's very true Ria! For a short while buying two small boxes of tea bags in Sainsbury's was cheaper than buying the big box! They wised up though and altered the price  ;)

Oh I see that all the time with 'twofers' and they are always well advertised and near the door or the end of an aisle.

You get things like £1.60 for one pack of four, buy two for £3.00, but when you go look at a 'normal' eight pack it is £2.79. I wonder how many of you have ever weighed a six pack of, say, tomatoes to get a comparable price to loose tomatoes on the vine? Try it, you might be surprised! ;)

I have just bought two packets of cereal, 750 grams. This is cheaper than the large one of 1kg.
Also it can be cheaper to buy three of the smaller Vanish than the large on which may be on special offer.
I watch prices as the BOGOF are not always cheaper.
But like the chocolate oranges when they are only £1.00
