Slow cooker, pressure cooker or microwave?

Postby Workingman » 19 Sep 2014, 15:43

I never cook with the microwave. It only gets used for defrosting or re-heating meals I have cooked on the hob or in the oven.

I love the slow cooker. It does great casseroles, curries, stews, especially those made with cheap cuts of beef such as brisket, skirt or shin. Great in Autumn or Winter.

Now, pressure cookers. I found a 3l Prestige one in one of those glory-hole shops the other day for £25 - they are £45 from Prestige and about £30 on Amazon plus postage. So I bought it. Today I did a half chicken in it with some stock - 13 mins from in the pot to turning the hob off. It was sooo good, fell off the bone and still tasted of chicken. I am now off to look for some recipes on the Internet.

I am tempted to ditch the microwave.

I used to use a pressure cooker a lot; when the ex and I were both working in London we didn't get home till about 7.30 so it was a game to try and have dinner ready by 8.
With that we could do things, like a bacon joint & veg, or a casserole. It's also brill for cooking dried beans etc.
I don't have one now, lack of space plus as you say the s/c is really good - have a Bolognese sauce in it right now ;)

The microwave does get used for odd things, eg white or cheese sauce, all-in-one in a jug, heating baked beans or soup, also veg in a m/wave steamer.

I use my slow cooker a lot.

I gave my pressure cooker away.

I hear up milk in my microwave - I may as well get rid of it really.

Also though, that Bolognese that's still cooking, it's a nice big batch, the rest will go in the freezer and then those portions will be re-heated in the microwave.
It's surely the most practical way to do that? Likewise the portions of chilli in the freezer :)

I loved my pressure cooker, I used to cook all sorts in it! 8-) The I moved back in with my mum and dad for a while, she used it to boil dad's hankies in and burned it

She could be a bit 'random' on the domestic front, my mum  ;) :D

Debih, it was your thread on pressure cookers that made this one catch my eye, now you've slung yours!

Di, I do cookathons and freeze. Reheating them is really all that my microwave gets used for. It is a cost-effective way of cooking, though.

Kaz, cooked hankies, ymmeeeee! I found a pot-roast recipe much the same as mum used to do large a brisket joint. Pressure cook it first, then into a med oven for a n hour or so to brown up.

Exactly, so don't ditch it ;)
Ours doesn't get a lot of use but I'm happy to keep it :)

It's the microwave or the toasted sandwich press. Decisions, decisions! :D
