1,400 children abused in Rotherham

Both the BBC and Sky are breaking news of these horrific incidents: rapes, dousing with petrol, trafficking, since 1997 to the present day. The Sky coverage give more detail.

The report finds that there was "denial" of the events by the council and police and the cover-up of previous reports in order for them not to be seen as racist.

What a sorry state this country is in.

No surprise whatsoever, I'm afraid. Maybe we could have the same time, money and resources devoted to this ongoing problem as is being given to finding out what a handful of celebs might or might not have done forty and fifty years since?

We are living in a sick society, however abuse has always gone on including incest Today it is hidden by the authorities as it was then, particularly if the abuse involves ethnics or those in high places.
Children's homes have always been sitting targets for the Paedophiles who all get off. As they always got off with a meagre sentence of caught. Chemical castration is what should be carried out on these monsters who are rife in our society

Now watch all the apologists for the British Pakistani community rush to their defence. What they don't see is the sheer scale and network of abuse perpetrated by these people, i.e. taxi drivers complicit in picking these girls up from school at lunchtimes and taking them off to punters to indulge in oral sex.

We need an enquiry to look at the British Pakistani community and how it functions viz this country ...... sexual abuse and terrorism are the half of it.

On another tack, Rotherham Council agencies and South Yorkshire Police have proved themselves totally unfit for purpose. Mass prosecution for dereliction of duty to the public, and sackings of officials and staff from these institutions should follow. Let us not forget the leaking of the Cliff Richard raid to the BBC and the taking away of children from the UKIP couple because they were UKIP; this is how they operate, whilst ignoring the racist elephant in the room.

(And if you're looking at failed minority-appeasing institutions, you can include Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Police, and the CofE Archdiocese of Birmingham while you're at it.)

(Scotland) Just another one of probably thousands of children being abused involving those in high places, Holly suffered with Downs Syndrome, Scottish abusers including the police and successive MP's. Along with GOVERNMENTS who are and were aware of what is happening in our god forsaken Society ignoring these savage atrocities in Rotherham and elsewhere throughout the UK.

It is a vile thing, and I hope they root out the perpetrators and the officials involved and throw the book at them.

However this is NOT a modern thing - Victorian London was full of brothels, far more than now, and child prostitutes were very common too. IN fact the legal age of consent was 12 We really should not look at the past with rose tinted spectacles IMO. Lots of horrible things went on, they just got swept under the carpet!

I agree Kaz, but we are supposed to have moved on, become better, and our laws have changed to reflect that.

Today there are calls for those in high places during that period to resign.

No way! If they were not doing their jobs properly they should be sacked. Any who have already resigned or retired should have their pensions cut to reflect their failures, All of them should be dragged before the courts to explain their actions.

I agree that we need to see sackings at all levels in the police and the council, but let's not lose sight of the original crime. You see, what gets me is this -

There are said to be 1,400 girls abused. But there have been 9 prosecutions in that period (Channel 4 News*). So, there must be 100's of other abusers out there in the British Pakistani community in Rotherham and the surrounding towns the girls were trafficked to, and on top of that, there are the facilitators - the taxi-drivers, the flat-owners, ......

The police and the CPS are very quick to say that all cases of historical sex abuse are being taken seriously, and all are investigated and prosecuted where appropriate. Are we now going to see criminal investigation of these 100's of abusers etc, (or will be have to wait 40 years until they're properly historic)?

If the South Yorkshire Police want to redeem their reputation - well, they need to get out there, get investigating and get arresting. Justice demands nothing less.
