If your dog gets a Tick, be careful that you don't pull it off and leave the head there.

They are easy to kill (The ticks, I mean). Just paint them with nail varnish.
They breathe through their skin and will therefore suffocate.

Vaseline does it too Aggers 8-) We're lucky, B covered this kind of stuff on her animal course in college, the one before she went to university :)

In the old days serious walkers wore sensible shoes (brown) with knee length stockings. They did it for a purpose and not to look like some quintessential rambler from a boy's own book. Nowadays waterproof cotton or man-made fibre gaiters are more the norm. When wandering through fern, bracken or heather they are about the only way to keep ticks in check.

We have a lot of adders around here on Cannock Chase. I don't want to tempt fate by saying that I've never seen one but John's come across quite a number of them. It's my worst nightmare.
I was quite comfortable walking on the common behind the house as I've not yet found anything to say that snakes - either adders or grass - are found on there but today I was talking to a lady and she happened to mention that her friend's dog was bitten and killed "over there" and pointed to the far end of the common :? Our vet posts on Facebook every so often that they keep a stock of anti-venom should any dogs be bitten on the Chase.

I'm always in proper shoes, or boots/wellies, and jeans when out over there.

That made me smile!

Apparently the man was bitten after he had picked the snake up.
I mean you just wouldn't do that, would you?

Adders are supposed to be pretty common around the York area.
