Using wood shavings in my garden sadly is a no no Frank. All, bar one, of my cats are either semi long or long haired and it's bad enough with them dragging 1/2 the garden into the house because it's been caught up on their fur; not sure I want to add wood shavings to the mess    Besides which it'll probably be too similar to the cat litter I use so guess what no doubt would happen

Shave the cats! Sorted. :P

I looked at that garlic thing and stories of it working are all over the web, even Gardener's World has a piece on it.

Here's my reciepe
1 bulb crushed dropped into 1 litre of water, boil for 5 mins, and strain into a bottle.
To use, add 1 Tablespoon per litre of water and spray.

I guess I sprayed monthly ish?????

They smell was a bit garlicky while spraying, but in didn't notice it at all afterwards, but then I have an awful sense of smell.

Actually thinking about it, I didn't have problems with caterpillars either, monarchs included... :?
Everything happens for a reason
