We have separate bank accounts too. But I consider all our savings joint. We have a small ISA and an even smaller amount on the premium bonds

I think the term Running away money was in (probably) the Mail, it might have been Jilly Cooper, but I do remember lots of us picking up the phrase :)
My mum always had bits like you Debih, she had her own bank a/c as well as their joint one so I'm not sure why, except when I was really poor she was able to help me in little ways without anyone else knowing.

We (only since last year) have a joint a/c, but each have our own too.
We have joint little stashes of cash; he empties his pocket of change (not that he ever has a huge amount as he doesn't buy much!), and if my purse gets a lot I empty it.
That all goes in jars and eventually we change it up and has always got added to holiday spending money :) The years when we didn't go away (most of them), we'd still have the boys for a week so would use it for days out :)

At the moment we're on a mission to save for another holiday, so when we can are both putting a tenner in a bag - it's adding up nicely :)

I think I know who coined the phrase actually. It is all coming back to me. I have a feeling it was a certain lady whose name begins with an L.

Both Mrs O and I have separate stashes of cash in the house, and we also refer to them as "running away money" - I'm sure I picked up the phrase from here! :D

Although we both have bank accounts, we tend to deal in cash rather than card for pretty much all our day-to-day expenditure except the weekly food shop, so we keep our stashes topped up, sometimes as much as £300 squirreled away ...... it's constantly being spent and replenished though.

I'm glad others remember it too :D Rodo I think you might be right 8-) ;)

Di we used to have a big jar full of change, we would both tip our 'shrapnel' as Mick calls it into it, but we stopped doing that when banks started getting iffy about changing it

Kaz we chuck it in the machine at Tesco, a commission comes off but you don't even have to sort it so it's worth it - you get a voucher for shopping :)

When we were both working, I'd have a little stash for myself   We had his bank account (as he was self-emplyed) and then we'd have "our" account. And I had one of my own, as my salary was paid into it.

As soon as I packed up smoking, I'd empty my purse out every night and keep that. That paid for a couple of holidays a year

Now, we have one account here and one account in Jersey, both in joint names.

And I have 200 euros hidden in the house    Sadly, he knows where it is

 Ton

Di I've seen those machines but had written off the idea as I knew they kept a commission....hmmm how much do the vouchers tend to be for, as that might be worth us starting up again :?:

Mick does have a leather coin tray (an Osprey freebie) in a bedside drawer, but I tend to scoop that up for bus money every now and again  :P  ;)

I've used those machines in the past. Asda used to give you either a voucher for the amount you'd put in, minus commision - I think it was 8% whenever I used them - or would give you cash. It was a right faff though as you had to queue at customer services to redeem the voucher from the machine and the CS in the local Asda is dreadfully slow and busy.

I save all 1p, 2p and 5p coins in a jar and usually count it up in the Summer and that's always gone towards spending money for the boys when we've gone to Cornwall. My Mom does the same for them and they usually end up with around £25 each. Amazing how it all adds up. I've always bagged the coins up in the proper bank bags and never had a problem changing it at Barclays (apart from the time the cashier took my debit card to prove I had an account before starting the transaction and forgot to give it back to me  ).

As for hiding money away, I have a tin the kitchen and every month I put away £15 which covers Christmas presents for family and friends and the Christmas food shopping. We have a joint current account and have done since we were in our late teens but the savings account is in my name, but only because I got fed up of asking John to come along with me to open it so did it myself :P
