The possible fractured wrist

Deb, my friend fractured her scaphoid a couple of years ago. She was in plaster for 12 weeks, but she didn't need surgery and she doesn't need a splint or any ongoing care. Now if she healed well at over 50 I bet L's young bones will heal even quicker.

There are a lot of 'may's' in that googling anyway

I am home. L has gone back to school. It is fractured!

She has a very bright pink plaster on - fortunately it doesn't cover her elbow and doesn't include her thumb. She has definitely fractured a scaphoid bone.

We have to go back in 6 weeks, on 22 August (two days after we get back from Cornwall) for her to have it removed, reviewed and probably recast). I am gutted - right before the summer holidays! But I'm looking on the bright side in that at least she won't miss much at school. It is her writing hand so she will have to use a laptop and can't do dance or PE.

Sadly, she has sports day tomorrow (can't do), bowling with school on Friday (she will try to bowl left handed), her birthday party trip to Laserquest (I will have to ring them and see if she will be allowed to do it, if not she will have to chose something more sedate), she usually swims at least twice a week during the summer holidays so that looks unlikely, we are off to Alton Towers though hopefully arm in cast shouldn't affect that and of course we are off to Cornwall for almost two weeks where we will hopefully be on the beach everyday and she will want to body board.

I am now off to research waterproof covers for them. Any ideas on the best way to keep sand out of a cast?

Thats the one I think I'm going to get Ria - it seems to have good reviews on netmums, etc. It will look like she's about to put her hand up a cows backside but hey, ho.

So now I'm wondering about keeping the sand out as she's not going to want to wear the big blue thing just for playing on the sand. I'm wondering about a long tubi-grip to go over the cast and tape it at either end!

Debih, I do not think that there is a sure fire way of keeping sand/sand dust out of the cast. Tubigrip is very loose woven so is probably not going to work. What about cutting a Marigold to make hand and wrist sections? The 'hand could be taped to the cast and when the wrist section is pulled all the way to the elbow it might make a decent seal. The cast is going to be removed just after you get back from Cornwall so not too long to suffer.

Becks used one of those blue things when she broke her wrist. It was OK for a shower or a short time in the water for a swim, so L will probably find it works for a bit of boarding.

I think we might try tubigrip taped up at the top and covered with a surgical glove at the hand! If the weather is good we are likely to spend all day, pretty much every day on the beach so I need to try to think of something!
