I know you mentioned before that your son was looking to buy a flat. Did he find one he liked?

Oh that's for later this year Jo.................his 'new' job started on Jan 1st. It's actually his old job but the council decided to take their IT in house and have employed him! Better money, better holidays, better pension! He's a very happy chappy at the moment He's squirrelled the money I gave him into an ISA and will be putting that towards his deposit

Weka thanks for the link but he is saving hard just for the deposit needed to get on the ladder - never mind paying it off in five years!

Don't worry about the time periods, the concepts in the book are what's important. It's got friends of mine into a nice home here and they are both on minimum wage, then, still following the concepts, they felt safe enough financially to have a baby. Neither draw any benefits either. I'm very proud of them. All this while homes here were at there least affordable ever.

Definitely worth a read.

My mum is the main squirrler, and has taught me well. Any money we got given, we were only allowed to keep a small bit of to spend there and then, all the rest went into a bank account that we never saw again. Come house buying time, mum gave me my bank book, and a quarter of a house deposit was sitting there. That, quite literally had been compounded by loose auntys, uncles and nanas had put into a piggy bank. I had saved the other quarter by that stage from my wage, and hubby had saved his half (he earns considerably more than me) and voila, we had our first home. I'm definitely doing the same for our children.
