but I nearly was robbed of my shopping today. I will never know whether it was a genuine mistake, but it could so easily have been a way of walking off with my shopping.

I went into the cafe and there was a row of single tables along the wall with a padded bench running along the wall and single chairs the other side. I sat down on the padded bench and put down my handbag next to me and my shopping bag next to that. Then I fiddled with my phone and started on my coffee. Suddenly the lady to the right of me stood up to go - with my shopping bag in her hand. I just happened to turn and look at her, then looked down at my bag. She laughed and said "I thought I hadn't bought anything". She seemed completely unfazed and totally laughed it off.

Well, it could have been an honest mistake couldn't it, but there again, it was very odd. How easily she could have left with my shopping if I hadn't just looked up then.

Surely she would have been surprised or embarrassed if it was a genuine mistake - sounds rather fishy to me, rather as though she might make a habit of that

That could be a good scam for someone 'ordinary' looking - who is going to challenge a woman carrying a shopping bag, it's so innocuous! If challenged she just shrugs it off.................

Glad you noticed Rodo, it doesn't sound like an accident to me either
I'm a bit paranoid about bags etc if we're out, I tend to keep my handbag on my lap, or else put my foot through the strap if it's on the floor

I also don't think it was an accident.... if I had done something like that in error I'd have been mortified and apologised no end and gone all red in the face. Her rather blasé attitude makes me think she's done this before

I'd think it as done on purpose Rodo, you were doing other things and not paying attention, so she thought "okay, off I go"
