oh its so exciting, tonight we got a new pet.........a wee Russian Dwarf Hamster - he is called Gizmo :D :D :D

Have been thinking about it for a while now, as hamsters are the only pet I am not allergic too, so we went off to the pet shop this evening and got him. Amy is very happy with him!

I love Hamsters, have had 2 in the past, one before Amy was born and one a few years ago, relatively easy pets to have ;)

aw yeah Kaz, my 1st hammy was Harry!!  Harry the mutant hamster - he wasn't very friendly and lived for over 3yrs, still loved him and he died just as I went on maternity leave :( then a few years ago we had Alvin, a wee white hammy who was lovely, but think he made it to about 2yrs. Hopefully Gizmo will have a long and happy life, he really is a cute wee thing!

I shall go and pop a photo on the other board ;)

Awww how lovely!! Hamsters are lovely little pets.

I always used to have them when I was little but my Dad developed asthma and my hamster at the time affected him so I he had to go and live at my aunty's house (the hamster, not my Dad).
I always said I'd get another when I left home and, sure enough, within minutes of getting a call to say we'd be completing on our flat the following day I was in the pet shop around the corner from my work  That hamster was Lionel Nutmeg, then we had Eddie, Eric and Harry over the years. John said that was it after we lost Harry, he said I couldn't have another because I always got too attached and too upset

Kaz, Lionel was an escapologist too - we had to put a small padlock on his door otherwise he'd break out

Oh yes Chop was an escapologist :D He was all chop-chop and his brother was a stick-in-the-mud :D
They're so tiny, the dwarf ones, he could squeeze through the bit by the door where there's a slightly wider gap :? I came down one morning to find him sitting on top of the sofa back

I got them after my first dog died, I wasn't ready for another dog but needed a new pet (or two). I had a cat though so the escapology was not a good idea :o They did ok, and were fascinating to watch - I'd first spotted this lovely 3-tiered cage at a car boot sale, that gave me the idea :D
Watch how much you/Amy feed it though Poll, they need ever so little and can sort of explode if they get too much. I learned a lot from a lovely vet who operated for the first time ever on a dwarf Chinese, Chop had a seed stuck in a pouch which made it swell horribly. It was successful though :D

Lionel had to have surgery too, he had a lump on his neck which needed removing. People said we were stupid for paying for an operation for him but he was our baby  I always remember the night we got him back from the vets and we left his cage door open to see if he felt like coming out but he was sitting inside looking bedraggled and very sorry for himself. Eventually he came out and ran behind the sofa. 10 minutes later he came trotting out looking as good as new, he'd had a good wash and was back to his perky self.

Tarzan once got out and somehow got up inside our gas fire in the living room   My dad had to actually dismantle it to get him out, the daft animal   We were always putting out treats to lure him out of strange places  The hamster, not my dad :P (Jo that did make me laugh  )

 He also used to swing across the bars of his cage in a really athletic way, which is how he got his name 8-)
