When Tom picked his options they were put into one of four groups, or pathways as they called them. The ones they felt were the higher achievers, or potential higher achievers, were restricted in what they could choose because they were the ones studying for this flippin' Baccalaureate. Where the other groups had four options each, Tom's group only really had two free options because two of the four were taken up with the compulsory language and the compulsory humanities subject. Tom really wanted to do ICT but it wasn't offered to his pathway so I asked if he could move to another pathway where he could drop having to do a language and do ICT instead but they wouldn't even discuss it, they'd made the decision that he was going to be in that pathway and that was where he was staying. As it turned out he got a D for his German and most likely would have got a higher grade at ICT which he'd always been really good at.

Funny how things change so quickly, when we went to Joe's options talk there wasn't a mention of pathways or Baccalaureates.
