Not wanting to tempt fate or anything but...

Postby meriad » 07 Feb 2014, 15:46

just looking at the weather forecast and the temperatures seem to be staying very steady for the next week and a bit. I know we've still got most of Feb and all of March and anything can happen then, but do you think it will still get really cold and snow at some point?

So many of the shrubs in my garden are starting to sprout their first leaves already and if it gets really cold I'm going to have to invest in lots of horticultural fleece me thinks and get lots of tubs into the greenhouse :)

We have terrific storms forecast for this weekend and more next week :( I think I'd rather have a bit of frost or snow...............

On TV, Paul the Weatherman, BBC Look North, mentioned that there didn't look to be much of a change for the next few weeks. That takes us into the last week of February and the weather sites I use only show one or two frosty nights, and then only to -1C. Most early plants can cope with -1 or -2.

Mind you, folklore talks about not casting a clout till March is out. ;) :o

No it doesn't, it's May - and it means the tree/blossom not the month ;) :D

   Never heard that saying so (obviously  ) googled it, as you do:

http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/till-may-is-out.html

and apparently it is the month of May vs the tree the saying refers to.... :? But then who knows - I'm sure other websites will insist it's the May Tree (which I think is much nicer). But either way - for me - that's still AGES away; I'd quite like some nice spring weather in situ by then.

gosh, just thinking about it - the lovely warm summer we had seems a far and distant memory

We raced against the snow to get home from legoland last year. We just managed to get home, unload the car and get it down to lower ground before we were cut off. It was a week before we were able to get the car home again.

That was last April.

Don't count your chickens Ria. We've still got a good couple of months before we can start thinking we've escaped the white stuff.
