11 year old girls!

Postby debih » 20 Jan 2014, 09:04

Both my girls have a mobile phone.

S has had hers for 3 years and after a year on pay as you go we switched her to a monthly plan - £10 a month. She bought herself an iphone and is really quite sensible with it.

L has had hers since her birthday last July and is still on pay as you go. She never seems to use it much - I put £10 on and it can last two to three months. At the beginning of January (two weeks ago!!) I topped it up with £20 expecting it to last until at least March, if not longer. Last night she commented that she only had 44p on it.

God only knows what she has been doing on it . She was read the riot act last night and has had the phone taken away for the rest of the month.

This morning I have swapped her to a £10 a month (capped) pay monthly SIM.

She probably downloaded a ring tone or something and didn't realise how expensive it would be! I am on PAYG and have been caught out like that in the past. Now I use the Orange Dolphin tariff, which means unlimited texts, net use and a certain amount of calls for free, as long as I top up by at least £10 per month :)

No - nothing to do with the internet or downloading - I checked. It is still turned off.

The little monkey has been rather text happy. She has 5000 texts a month included in this package - surely she can't go over that!

Debih, could L have been introduced to new services/games by her friends who might have got super smartphones for Christmas - the timing would be about right? If so, she might now have apps and services running in the background. Even though they are not "active" they could still be using data and thus draining credit. Services such as Wi-Fi (looking for hot-spots) or GPS, and the apps that use them, are two services that spring to mind. There will be others. Unless they are needed, as they sometimes are, turn them off and see if things improve.
