It was so ridiculously simple to make, although rather messy and it does use rather a lot of chocolate!!
I have never fancied buying one of those giant cupcake moulds as the thought of one makes me feel rather sick. But then I saw a smash cake on a website somewhere so ordered one from ebay.
You just pour melted chocolate into the mould and let it run all round the sides, let it dry and add a couple more layers. I struggled with the edges though and therefore they weren't thick enough or straight enough to match up exactly - thus leaving gaps at the join.
I've seen some done with a dark chocolate base and green chocolate (you can buy coloured chocolate drops especially for baking) on the top and then skittles stuck on to look like baubles - the perfect xmas tree smash cake.
He's not a massive fan of cake but he loves chocolate and sweeties (Haribo's, etc) so I have filled the bottom part of the mould with little bags of sweets and some skittles. He needs to whack it to break the shell. I bought eating chocolate rather than cooking chocolate so that it will taste better. I only used the cheap bars from Lidl - I think I probably used around 500g of chocolate in total.
