security at UK airports

this is a pet peeve of mine

coming out of Bristol ,2 tins of brand name bake beans in my carry on luggage (£1-40p a tin here),no problem said security man

coming out of Gatwick ,same luggage,tins confiscated-can't have those he says

he said ,you need to check what is allowed through at the airport you are using.

now ,do they all have different rules? or make them up as they go along?

Yes I think they might if they are not owned by the British Airports Authority - Blackpool Airport is a terrier airport that thinks it's a rottweiler and is an absolute nightmare to travel through.

In the bottom of my cabin bag was a camping "knife", a sort of spatula from an earlier camping trip. Big argument, sod it. put the bag in the hold.... and that's where it goes.

Sat in the departure lounge I am then approached by a police security officer who informs me that my attitude is not acceptable as the "knife" is prohibited materiel within the cabin.

I then produce from my shirt pocket a stainless steel ball point pen, allowed through all the checks. It has a sharp point and is far more dangerous as a weapon than the blunt edged "knife", but it is described as a "pen", so no danger there then.

"If I stick it in your neck will you be any less dead than if I stuck my camping spatula in you?"

I was allowed to fly, but my knife had to stay in the bag in the hold.

Yet you can take glass perfume bottles on board, they even sell them inflight, which could be smashed and used as a weapon.

The rules are crazy! When you have strict weight limits on luggage, things like shower gels and body lotions, and sprays etc can be heavy, so it would be nice to be able to take them in your hand luggage - but you can't as there is a strict limit on the liquids you can take in hand luggage, and even lipstick counts as a liquid You can however spend a fortune in the plane side Boots or perfume shop, or booze duty free and take any of those items on in their carrier bags, no matter how heavy or how 'liquid'

It really annoys me
