Got to agree with you Frank - I am no great shakes as a cook but I can make the dishes you list there, and from scratch. It's a shame that so many can't :(

That's the problem, Kaz, if they can't do the basics they are hardly likely to save money attempting the more adventurous, are they?

What we need is a basic cooking programme with people like Jamie and Rick Stein and James Martin showing people how to do simple and nutritious meals for everyday eating - the stuff we rely on day-to-day - without all the sea salt and saffron nonsense.

He has been doing take away meal alternatives. Kebabs, pizza, curry and this week a Chinese fish ball recipe.

And basics like steak and chips, roast chicken and roast lamb.

But I agree - lots of people in this country need to know the basics. But I'm not sur if it would make interesting viewing

My mum was and still is a good 'home cook'.

I learnt alot from her, ie, good, basic cooking skills and knowledge.

I have loved, over the many years, cooking, feeding and teaching my 3 boys the joy of 'proper' food. :D

Mum was never a lover or user of ready, processed or frozen meals and neither have I been.

Living here for 10 years 'ready' food has never been an option (good!)

I can never understand why a family of 4 can spend £20 on a bargain bucket meal of crud when, for so much less..and so much healthier..why not make their own?
