Is it too early ....

Postby TheOstrich » 03 Sep 2013, 11:53

..... for acorns to be falling from oak trees?

I ask because I've just been to the bottom of our garden. Either it isn't too early - or the bleddy squirrels have been zinging them at me from the cover of the foliage ! One direct hit and one near miss.

I wouldn't put it past the beggars .... I thought I could hear evil chuckling from up above ......

I've been attacked by acorns as well - so either it is the right time or the definitely squirrels have started their attacks to take over world domination :D

But on a serious note - my brother was commenting the other day just how full of acorns a tree in a neighbours garden was compared to other years and I think the Rowan trees are really full of berries as well; and also earlier than normal (but not sure about that)? Would that because of last year being a fairly long and cold winter or is it a sign that the coming winter is going to be horrid?

hhhmmmmmmmmmm

We've also noticed that about the rowans, Meriad - some really huge bunches of bright red berries - and some of the oaks in the nature reserve are really full of acorns buds.

I wonder if that means we'll also have a colourful display of holly berries and plenty on conkers later on this year ..... we usually go collect acorns, conkers and hazelnuts in the autumn and then display them in a shallow wooden bowl next to our fireplace. It's said the conkers help ward off the garden spiders coming into the house, and in our experience it seems to be true.

I noticed that a tree on the way home from the gym is absolutely full of acorns!
I have a holly bush in a container in the garden and, unlike last year, it's got a lot of berries just about to turn!

Every tree and bush is starting to heave with berries and fruit this year! Bumper crop, but I'm hoping this is because of the wet spring and lovely summer :D rather than a hard winter coming - although that is the folklore :?

Hmmm...I'm hoping it's not a sign of another harsh Winter on the way too :?

The conkers and acorns are dropping round here, but we have had a few days of fairly high gusts of wind. The children below have a fair collection of both drying out on the patio. :D

I am thinking that it has to do with the cool and wet spring and the warm and sunny summer rather than a harsh winter coming up.

I haven't noticed any fallen acorns, but I have observed that many deciduous trees here are shedding
quite a lot of autumn leaves, which is certainly earlier than usual.

It seems that many changes in normal seasonal features are happening now throughout the year. Climate change?

We have just returned from a week in Devon staying in our touring caravan. The first afternoon we sat outside in the sunshine reading and 2 acorns fell with some force onto me - yes we had parked under lovely trees without checking or even thinking about what type they were!! Every night we had acorns falling onto the roof and bouncing off - guaranteed to wake you. Still we counted our blessings and were thankful it wasn't ripe conkers!
