Nothing can just be nice and simple can it!!!!

The vet rang me just after 10 this morning.

Milile had a really good night. They had her on an iv drip which she managed to chew out. She has kept her breakfast down - it is very liquid with a little solid food in. They are keeping her in for the day and will feed her small amounts throughout the day and slowly increase the amount of solids to see if she can keep it down. She is also on medication to help settle her stomach.

The vet (the same one I spoke to last night) is a little concerned that the accident may have caused a hiatal hernia. She wants to speak to one of her colleague to see what he thinks. This in itself isn't life threatening (although it may cause complications later in life, particularly with pneumonia). If they decide that it could be this they may want to investigate further and they can't do that at their vets.

If it is that it can be treated in a number of ways - surgery to remove it (which can be quite invasive as it means going in through the chest), controlling her diet, drugs for life which will help control it. There are lots of degrees of severity for it (I am hopeful that as they have done the x rays and the barium meal thing that if she does have this it isn't severe and won't need surgery).

She did stress that this was only a suspicion and that the main thing was to keep offering Millie more solid food as the day goes on and see how she copes with it. They are going to ring my after 4pm today to let me know how she is getting on and she should be able to come home, even if she is still on the liquid diet.

I have googled it (as you do - bloody fatal google is) and prognosis is good.

So, all in all at the moment I think it is a pretty good diagnosis.

Please tell me you have pet insurance?

what a worry, but hopefully the food will start staying down and no further surgery is required. Fingers crossed x

Oh this just keeps on going doesn't it? I hope if you don't have insurance that the nasty neighbour can be guilted into coughing up some money! In fact he ought really to pay your excess, even if you do! :|

Oh yes - we have pet insurance. Thank god! We are covered up to £4000 for each incident and the vet says that will be more than enough!

And The Idiot! Well, in one of his very caring "How's Millie" conversations with me (in fact it was the first proper conversation on the day after it happened) at the school gate he made it quite clear that he wouldn't be contemplating any sort of pay out as yes, he might be able to claim on his car insurance but that is only if he accepts liablity for the accident which he doesn't" were pretty much his exact words to me. The Head had to hold me back as she heard him say it to me!

The w*nk*r. Excuse my French!

That's exactly what he is.
I honestly wouldn't want to let him get away with this.

No - we can't do anything legally.

In actual fact as she wasn't on a lead and on a public road we are liable should he wish to claim against us!!! The vet said that even if he had been 10 times over the speed limit then he still wouldn't be to blame.

Its difficult to explain where we live but she is always on a lead on "normal" roads but just never is on a lead on our lane. It is a supposedly quiet lane that leads nowhere so is only used by residents. We are right near the top, with only a couple of houses further up than us (where The Idiot lives). It is a single track lane with no pavements so the nature of the lane means that people and animals walk in the middle of it. We have horses come up and down all the time (the lane turns into a bridle path at the end) and we have loads of walkers. It is very steep and there are lots of little bends and concealed driveways. There are long stretches where there are no houses - just a lane running through a wooded area and then you get to a little built up area of around 10 or so houses and then back to woods, then back to houses again.

It makes me really cross. I accept it was an accident - when it boils down to it she did run out in front of a car. No matter how fast or slow the car was going she ran out.

Its his complete lack of remorse and his wife's complete lack of interest that has really got to me. I know that everyone deals with things in different ways but even so. Yes, he has asked a few times how she was getting on. If it were me I would be completely mortified and would be round there offering help with getting to the vets, picking up the kids whilst there were at the vets, offering to pay any excess, etc. They are supposed to be friends - not just neighbours.

They are a pretty self centred couple and even though I class them as friends (not close friends, just friends through the kids) they are rather "up" themselves. Also, it wouldn't be so bad if he had learnt his lesson and started to slow down but (according to other neighbours) he is still belting up and down the lane. God help him if I see him as I will stop him and have right go.

Both he and his wife told another friend what had happened, although it was their version of it rather than what actually happened. Wendy said she had no idea how bad it was as they played it down saying he had "clipped" her and that she was perfectly okay. I suppose is still alive is still okay then yes, she is okay.

I will just continue to watch out for him speeding up and down the road and if I catch him ask him if a dog was not enough - is he aiming for one of our children next time!
