The Wellington earthquake merited about 15 seconds on the BBC news. Pictures of water sloshing around in a swimming pool ...

Goodness me, another earthquake in NZ. How many is that in the last two years? Hope you continue to be OK Weka.

Daylight is just breaking now, so I guess we will have better news soon. Sounds like Wellington has mostly dodged a bullet. Twitter (#eqnz if your interested) had reports of sink holes, the mecure hotel sinking 50cm on one side, there's some windows out in the cbd and cladding on the ground. People are being asked not to go to work till they are told their building is safe and not before midday to give the crews time to clean up. But it certainly sounds like they have been auite lucky. Some people here in auckland have been reporting them as well. I haven't felt any, but our house has creaked oddly a few time.

Cromwell, I can only guess, but it would be well in the thousands. The majority we don't feel as they are too deep and too little. We sit on the sites of the pacific plate and the Australian plate, and our country has that fault line running the length of it.

Thanks for that Weka - I had no idea of the scale of the problems that NZ has with earthquakes. It's obvious that they are going to continue, as well.

Like I said, the majority of quakes we are just not aware of.

Wellington is probably the most prepared of all the cities, a lot of the big buildings are designed to move and sway on rollers etc. what they have discovered is that some buildings swayed at different speed to their neighbour, so have bumped into each other.

In auckland we are more likely to have a volcano. The last one was only 600 odd years ago, and there are over 50 volcanos scattered around auckland.

It's really is paradise here, but nowhere is perfect aye?

Blimey! You are right though, it's still a beautiful place.
