Letter back re school transport!

I have had the letter back today telling us that S isn't eligible for free school transport as we live less than 3 miles away from the school.

I have rung to ask how far away we actually are as it didn't say so on the letter and we are 2.97 miles.



The woman I spoke to was very nice and has said that she will run the check again for me tomorrow and email me to let me know. I doubt it will change - the house isn't going to suddenly move during the night.

It's many years since I had to worry about school transport, but I remember what a palaver it was even then They didn't take into account how difficult the journey was, more a case of distance as the crow flies

If they were going to be that pedantic I would want to know EXACTLY where the measurements were being taken from/to, what software was being used, the route plotted - every turn and road crossing, and if they didn't tell me I would threaten them with a FOI request and the intervention of my MP and local Councillor.

How annoying!!!

I think buses should be free for under 18s during term time. It might get some cars off the road during rush hour. Every morning four cars drive off our close with parents taking children to local schools which they could get a bus to (with a short walk afterwards) and 10 minutes later those same four cars come back
Staffordshire offer a card to the under 20s which gives them subsidised bus travel within the county, or on journeys starting or ending in the county but it's still £1 per journey and for Joe going to school it saves just 5p. It's different for Tom though as he's now full fare so otherwise we'd be paying £2 for him. Even so, it's £20 a week for both of them using their cards.
I just checked on Google maps and we're 2.28 miles away from school and it's a long way when you've got books, a packed lunch, a bottle of water, a PE kit, and in Joe's case, a guitar.

The distance is a big part of ours but the main thing is the steepness of the hills!

We live at the top of a really, really steep hill. The school is at the top of another really, really steep hill. So, if they were walking, they would have to walk down a very long, steep hill, along a very flat part and then back up a very long, steep hill. We reckon it would take around 90 minutes to walk.

And then do it all in reverse the other way!
