Anyone know Combe Martin?

Postby Diflower » 22 Jun 2013, 21:10

Am trying to find a holiday cottage, for us and the boys, plus dog, since we can't really leave her with anyone else.
I've found this, which looks lovely and has everything within walking distance plus more with the car. But having googled, I'm none the wiser as to whether it's a good place to stay. And it doesn't have a garden so am not quite sure...

I don't know the actual cottage, Di, but from what I remember of Combe Martin, it's very hilly.

It's only a short drive from there to Ilfracombe, which is OK but not spectacular (IMO). The coastline is very rocky and we used to go crab-hunting in the rock-pools at Lee Bay which is on t'other side of Ilfracombe. Nearest proper "sandy" beaches of any repute are at Woolacombe, which is further west, but quite an easy drive from Combe Martin. And, of course, there's the Exmoor National Park.

Ideal if you want a good old-fashioned self-reliant country / walking / seaside holiday in, as Vic says, a beautiful location, but not if you want to "hit the shops" .... the nearest proper town is Barnstaple. Mrs O would probably go stir-crazy after three days ...

Everywhere in North Devon is hilly. I love North Devon, its my second favourite place after Cornwall. From what I know of Combe Martin it is one long street and not a lot else. I would look at Lynmouth which is a lovely little town or even Croyde Bay. Sadly I would say avoid Ilfracombe, which although going through a regeneration project is quite a sad little town these days, but used to be nice.

This is a good company and their chat room is very good.

I'll ask Grumpy when he gets up - he worked there for almost a year.

H says sorry Di, he doesn't feel able to comment, as it was a while ago and things change.

He loved the place though and knew both pubs, the London Inn where stayed was lovely, I went there once and the chippy was very good too

But hilly, if I remember rightly.

Maybe somewhere else?

I don't know Combe Martin, but if you fancy the other side of Exmoor I can recommend Dunster. Lovely place :D

Thanks all, very much appreciated :)

I'd gone off that one as no garden, have been trying to narrow down an area today. Yes I remember Ilfracombe as being nothing special too.
Hilly is fine, I do know the area but from a long time ago; the friend who used to have Minnie to stay lived in Minehead for a few years.

Loz at the moment I'm looking more around Watchet/Porlock and inland a bit, so yes including Dunster, so thanks for that :)
Back to it...
x

Ps Ossie I don't do shops except food ones :D
