Poor little Millie

She is so pitiful at the moment.

On Monday night she was violently sick after she had her tea. The same thing happened at my mums on Tuesday and then again after her tea on Tuesday night.

I rang the vet on Wednesday and she said to just give her scrambled egg and she kept that down on Wednesday night and again on Thursday morning. Just before I took her to the vets for her check up on Thursday afternoon our neighbour gave her some ham and that all came back up in the car and I noticed blood in it.

The vet had a good feel of her tummy and said she thought that the medicine we were putting on her food may have affected the lining of her stomach and to stop giving her that and to give her something else instead and stick to scrambled egg or plain chicken. Up came the dinner again that night. Friday morning it stayed down but Friday night it all came back up again. This morning she was terrible and was really retching after it - you could tell it was really hurting her - she hadn't retched before.

Rang the vet and they were fantastic, opening their afternoon surgery 10 minutes early so they could fit her in. They gave her an anti sickness injection and told me to try her on some chicken an hour later. Which we did and she promptly threw it back up again. They also told us to stop giving her her pain killers in case it was a reaction to that.

Rang the vet again who said to leave it until tomorrow morning now and not feed her anything. Then to feed her some scrambled egg and ring and let her know how she gets on. If she brings it back up then she has to spend the day in hospital (hopefully not the night) to go on an iv drip to get some fluids back into her.

She is obviously feeling much better as she is obviously desperately hungry. She keeps coming to where her bowl should be and sniffing around to see if she can find any food. She has even been outside hunting around the area where she kept being sick on the hope of finding some remnants (she did find something earlier which I think was very small but she gobbled it down and it stayed down so I am hopeful for tomorrow).

It is pitiful to watch her and I desperately want to try her with some food. But I daren't as if it comes back up again there is nothing we can do about it until tomorrow morning when we ring the vet at about 8.30 to let her know how she is. I'd rather her be hungry overnight than be sick and be worrying about that.

She isn't drinking all that much at the moment either. I thought she would drink if she couldn't eat but obviously dogs are different to us. She did go for a wee earlier though so she can't be all that dehydrated yet. The reason for the drip is more to do with the lack of some sort of electrons in her body rather than dehydration - the vet said that if whatever it is gets too low the dog can go downhill very rapidly.

So fingers crossed for keeping it down in the morning.

Oh bless her but I bet it is the painkillers that have aggravated her stomach. Because animals can't have Aspirin or Paracetamol all their painkillers are Brufen based and that is a bugger for stomach irritation, mind you so is Aspirin. She was probably on Morphine when she was first injured, but they wouldn't keep her on that for too long.

I hope she is ok tomorrow and manages to keep her breakfast down :(

Up early as I have been worrying about her.

She has had an egg, scrambled, for breakfast. Pretty much straight after eating she went outside and was pacing about as though she was going to be sick but she has managed to keep it down. I am hoping to see her drinking water at some point today.

Will be ringing the vet in an hour or so to see what she wants us to do but hopefully she won't have to go in to go on the drip now.

Debih when Minnie was so poorly the vet told us to just give her rice at first (after a day with no food at all). Cook it and cool it then give her literally just a teaspoonful; if ok then another 15-30 minutes later. After 3 or 4 of those being ok, then a tablespoonful, with another an hour or so later.
The next day plain cooked chicken could be added to the rice - a couple of tablespoons of rice with one of cut-up chicken.

Before all that she had a drink thing from the vet which she had to have in tiny amounts, which was for nourishment and anti-dehydration I think.
I'm sure the vet knows what they're doing but egg sounds a little bit rich. Different problem I know, but still both are stomach/digestion based. I have terrible problems with my own stomach due to anti-inflammatories over the years and really feel for Millie - and you.

Thanks Di. I will try her on some rice tomorrow - the vet says we have to stick to egg this afternoon.

The vet rang earlier and is pleased she kept the food down but is rather concerned about her reaction when she had ate. She says she will give her the benefit of the doubt today as she did keep it down and she is going to ring us later for an update. I have to feed her again at about 3pm. She has bought our Tuesday appointment forward to tomorrow and they may xray her and keep her in for the day on a drip, depending on how today goes.

I took her out for a walk just after the vet rang and she was fine - really bright and alert. Then when we got home she did something she hasn't done since before her accident - emptied her basket of toys out and started playing with them. She also had a good lick round her bowl for any last bits left in there.

So will just have to see how she goes this afternoon when she has her dinner.

And I will be buying a massive tin of chocolates for the vet when I go shopping - they really have been fantastic.

I was going to suggest rice as well Di, and then plain cooked chicken, then when my puppy had gastroenteritis we were told to add plain terrier meal. Actually if I remember rightly we started with that baby rice, but then he was only 8 weeks old so maybe that was why

That is good news she sounds a lot better in herself. I suppose if it is irritation from the drugs, then it is going to flare up straight after eating

Poor Millie!!! I do hope she continues to recover and is well soon (((((((((((((x))))))))))))))

Have you spoken to that neighbour recently or his wife? You must still be very angry with him - I know I would be :(

His wife has never mentioned it at all Kaz, even though I have seen her and spoken to her on a number of occasions. He was asking how she was but has stopped now.

Talking to another friend the other day she was horrified to find out how bad Millie was as they had told her that he had "clipped" her with the car but she was perfectly alright. Just a bit of a bump on her leg. Wendy was horrified when I told her what had actually happened and couldn't believe what they had told her. Idiots.

She (Millie, not Wendy) had some scrambled egg at about 3pm and although she kept it down she was pacing about outside as though she was going to be sick and pawing at the ground as though it was hurting her. I spoke to the vet who has booked us in for the morning and she said that depending on what the vet seeing her thought they may put her on a drip or xray her.

But then I gave her two soup spoons full of plain boiled rice with a tiny, tiny bit of chicken chopped up really small at about 5pm and she kept it down. She had the same thing about an hour ago and that was fine too. I will give her a little more at about 9pm and then will leave it until the morning when she can have the same thing. So fingers crossed that she is on the mend.

She seems fine in herself - we have put the kitchen back in the kitchen today and so have a dining room back and she has been really interested in everything that has been going on and has also been playing with her toys again this afternoon. :D :D :D :D
