Anaesthetic

I have just been on placement at obstetric and gynae theatres......a spinal does take about 10-15mins to set up and wait for it to work etc, but you will be awake so obviously better for you.....general is quicker to give and works instantly. Depends if you want to be awake during the procedure and be able to hear and potentially see what is going on.

BOTH spinal and general can affect the bladder, in my experience more so after a general anaesthetic, its just the effect of anaesthetic and things poking and proding your bladder area, some patients can go into fluid retention, small percentage require a catheter which can cause you to be kept in overnight but again in my experience its mostly men this happens to for some reason!

Also, depends if you want a big needle going into your spinal area, I personally would rather have a general because of problems I had when Amy was trying to come into the world, involved needles in my spine.

Thanks Poll that is really helpful. I am leaning more and more towards a spinal, but wouldn't be concerned if they suggested a general. I just hate the horrible hungover feeling after a general

Men have a longer urethra to be subjected to closure after lower abdominal work requiring catheterisation. You will be lucky MM if you can avoid having to have one. Very best wishes for a successful operation anyway. x

I didn't now there was a difference between epidural and a spinal. I always thought they were one and the same.

Glad to help a bit MM, I did see a few things similar to what you are having, hysteroscopy, pretty straightforward and doesn't usually take too long, very interesting to observe - obviously on a screen, and you will be left with a few little scars as it is done 'key hole'.

I was told at the hospital I was working in, they have changed the types of anaesthetic used to prevent the 'hangover' feeling, although not sure it works for everyone, some people just feel rubbish afterwards and need to sleep! For some reason I can't sleep once I wake from anaesthetic, very annoying!!

I have seen a hysterectomy done this way, I think I personally would rather not be awake, im sure with the spinal they can give you 'relaxants' to make you sleepy so you would probably be drowsy throughout the whole procedure.

I am sure it will all go smoothly and you will recover well

I don't want to be drowsy, I hate that. Because they kept me waiting so long for my op last year, I was a tad anxious by the time I got in to the operating room. They said they would give me something to relax me and my last words where, I really really don't like this feeling and then I was gone. So I know I really really don't like being relaxed.

ah thanks for that link I have seen similar procedures but all were done under a GA so I guess it is your choice if they are offering both GA and Spinal, I saw lots of spinal's in the obstetric theatre for c-sections and they are very good
