Is it right to evict pensioners

I watched a husband and wife on television just before. He was 78 and she was 74. They were renting MOD accommodation which was no longer in use for service personnel and therefore had been let out to tenants. Apparently this couple had an eviction notice pushed under their door saying they would be evicted in two months as the accommodation was required for other purposes. The suspicion amongst the community was that the accommodation was required to house illegal immigrants.

I appreciate it is very difficult to house the large numbers of immigrants arriving on our shores but why should people already renting a property, especially the elderly, be evicted from their homes so that others can take their place. People like Justin Welby are the first to preach that compassion should be extended to people who are fleeing for their lives, but they have very little to say about those who are being evicted to accommodate others and who are the ones that actually pay the price.

Intrinsically there is nothing wrong in evicting people, be they 18 or 81, if they have broken the terms of their tenancy, leasehold or mortgage agreements.

However, what we have seen in recent years is the overuse of no-fault evictions or, even worse, made-up fault evictions. This looks to be one of those. They used to be the preserve of private landlords but have crept in to corporate and social (council and HA) landlord properties.

The Cons were supposed to be giving us protection form these charlatans but have U-turned.

These no-fault evictions are awful! My eldest was on the receiving end of one a year or two back

It is always wrong. If they want to close the lease they need to give notice of at least 1 year for this kind of government let and then work with the people.

This will be a project to use the space, they will have known for some time that it is required.

Poor management and planning creating a bad situation. Preferably they should fight it in court with legal aid.

Not quite. You seem to be conflating closing a lease, legally, with no-fault evictions. I do agree that tenants, those paying their dues, need a lot more time. Howerver, there is a BIG difference between them and the chancers. There are many examples other than the one Meds gave.
