I've always used lard in pastry, egg to bind it. It makes the pastry very short and light and the family always say it's the best they've had.

Jo, you dinosaur. Jamie Olive-oiler, who glugs out the evil stuff, will be round to sort you out. :o

Saundra, will you marry me? We could live out our lives in a shoebox in t'middle of t'road. Not the A165 though, the B1253 to Boynton is quieter. ;)

I can't do this grazing, eating-on-the-go, thing. I hate crisps, chocolate bars and snacks, except in desperation. I despair when I see whole families sat on a bench tucking in to burgers, KFC's 'fries' onion rings and drinking chemical laden pop.

You know that you're going out so make a pack-up of fresh stuff. More nutritious and way cheaper.

Jen, we seem to have a consensus going on here re pastry. Flavour and texture are winning the day. :D

He did Saundra

Tom and Joe did cooking at secondary school but never anything too involved. I remember that Joe made scones in Year 7 and again in Year 8. I think they only did it in the first two years. I remember one of them making coleslaw too.

Home Ec was a totally different matter when I was at school (and I did it to O Level), everything was made from scratch and I even remember we had to make our own puff pastry.
Not sure if she was known nationwide but we had the son of Janice Nicholls in our class (she was on a music show in the 60s) and he always used to bring in ready made pastry and things like tinned pie filling when we were supposed to cook from scratch, it was scandalous! For some reason though he was allowed to get away with it.

She was on Thank Your Lucky Stars with Brian Matthews.

Juke Box Jury was David Jacobs.

I loved both programmes and rarely missed either of them, definitely shows my 77yrs

Don't think so. David Jacobs was on Juke Box Jury. Janice was on Thank Your Lucky Stars with either Keith Fordyce or maybe Ben Matthew as presenters. Jen has it right.

Neither show was particularly popular with us younger teenagers of the time for being too "establishment" in the run up to banning our pirate radio in 1967. :(
