No Confidence!

Postby Workingman » 20 Oct 2023, 13:17

That's what the electorates in Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire delivered to the Tories, and those were not the first.

How many Con MPs with small majorities will be thinking the same about Sunak? What hapens if they put letters in? A large number are expected not to stand again in a GE, what if they decide to quit before then?

Not good times for the Cons.

They were bye-elections, you can't read too much into them, surely.
A general election is an entirely different kettle of fish.

That's what they always say - the losers. It's what the train of Ministers have been trotted out to say.

They had one electoral asset - Boris johnson. But they allowed him to be brought down, with petty jealousies and backstabbing well to the fore.
Then Liz Truss won the vote, but that didn't suit Tory mp's, so the rules were fiddled to exclude the Tory membership and "The most intelligent MP", Rishi Sunak, was duly eased into place. "The adults are in charge", crowed Rishi's fan club.

Well, how are the adults doing at the moment?
Sunak had five pledges he said we should judge him on; he's failing on every one. He's a dud. A nerdy low powered PM, as one commentator has it.

There's no enthusiasm for Starmer that i can see, but the Tories have been in power now for thirteen years and they have completely run out of steam. General Custer had a better result against Sitting Bull than Sunak is going to get at the next GE.

You recall a conversation I had with a Tory party member about the time Truss was evicted.

She was asking who she should vote for. I told her it didn't matter so long as it wasn't the very best choice because they were going to lose the next election and that choice would then not be able to lead the opposition.

I told her the Tories needed to just put someone in place, let the rabble mess them up and then, when they lose the next election, choose the very best to stand up in opposition.

Usually, but not with that huge a swing.

The Conservatives are counting on their voters who stayed at home - the turnout at Tamworth was only 36% - turning out at a general election.
But I think they are in for a shock; I think most of them will still stay at home.
So Labour to win a big majority but on a low turnout.

Tory MPs, smelling the coffee, rightly got rid of the disaster that was the Johnson. Unfortunately they did not bank on the Monocles and Blue Rinsers backing Truss. Fortunately, though, she and Quasi made such a mess of things in such a short time that with an impending 'no confidence' vote she resigned.

So what did the MPs do next? They installed a blancmange man, one who seemed to be safe. They must have hoped that with manic use of the bailing bucket he would keep the raft afloat without doing too much damage in order for his eventual successor to sail on. What they did not realise was that he was weak, inept and lacking charisma or any decent ideas, so now the raft is waterlogged and going down.

We now hear their frantic barrel scraping efforts, but there are no 'very bests' to be found. All they are getting are slow drips from the paper thin bottom of the barrel. That is partly why they will be in for a beating not just voter turnout.
