Washing Machines

I posted on the good morning thread about needing a new washing machine; after doing a bit of research I've narrowed it down to either a Bosch or a LG; both have really solid feedback when it comes to build and reliability and their features really are much of a muchness. But the one thing that separates them is the way they turn the drum; the Bosch has the usual belt that connects from the motor to the drum whilst the LG has what they call a direct drive (which is magnetic based if I understand it right).

So which is better? A belt is cheap to replace if it fails (which at some point it probably will as they stretch; but the direct drive motor will outlast any belt issue


My dishwasher is a Bosch; I've always had Bosch for that and I'd never go with anything else. Not had a Bosch washing machine though.

Mine is a beko I have always just gone in a shop or oneline never look at review
never had a problem with Beko used to always by zanuss I'm not technically minded at all good luck

I'm the same as Saundra. Not a clue. I just go for what is easy to use and a reasonable price.

We have a Beko too. Had it for about 10 years.

Ria I had an LG once, but it drove me mad as the least little thing used to have it flashing an “error code” at me The one I have now is a Beko - no frills but it does the job very well

Ria I love my LG. It's silent which is great as we use economy 7. My sister in law had one and I was desperate for my Zanussi to go wrong, so I could have an LG and the Zanussi lasted for ever, I actually dumped it because it started to smell musty. But my LG.....I have had it about 8 years, never had a problem, never had an error code. My only complaint would be the length of the programmes, especially one called hygiene that I was happily using to wash my bedding until I came down for a drink one night and discovered it still had 3.52 mins to run. Now they go on cotton. But I think that is a common complaint nowadays for most makes they are either really long programmes or really short

I used the mix and the easy care, both about 1hr 30mins one slightly longer.

Luke has a Bosch, well Luke has had two Bosches but because they wash at night I will make sure he has an LG next time too

We have a Bosch, we must have had it about fifteen years. Obviously we have been very happy with it!

We bought a Bosch. It is about four years old. Not had any problems with it. Used to have a Hoover. It wanted a major repair so went and bought the Bosch.

Am thinking of replacing the fridge. The existing one is a tall larder fridge. It must be over ten years old. I just want a small one for milk butter and meat. I like to buy fresh food
and only use it for food which will go off at normal room temperatures.

Ria, I said on another thread that I have just replaced my washing machine. Swapped the Candy for a Hoover.when the controller on the Candy died.

As a former mechanical engineering technician I think that the belt versus direct drive is neither here nor there. Cars have cam belts that last about 30,000 miles whilst turning the engine at about 2,000 rpm to move the car for all that time. A washing machine will never come anywhere near that sort of load.

It is more often that the electronics fail rather than the mechanicals. Go for one with simple pre-sets rather than one which is computer controlled is my advice. The new Hoover is as quiet as a church mouse, even on 1,500 spin speed. Just saying.
