What an interesting thread.

We didn't have a phone until 1952 when we moved into a new house. I forget the number.

I remember once dialling a number that I had seen the GPO engineer use to test the line. Nothing happened until I plonked the handset back on, and then it started ringing and I couldn't stop the damn thing! I had to disconnect the wires in the connecting box and get the engineer back to fix it. I never told him what I had done.

Do you remember... "On the third stroke it will be 8-45 a.m. precisely".

Aggers I remember that happening as my mum was a telephonist and then worked in the office organising the engineers, so she would test the line by dialling a number if we had problems :)
Gosh 1952, you were posh :D I think it was about 1966 before we had one :D I do remember the number though, I use some of it for passwords ;)

Most of our numbers around here are 5 digit numbers which often confuses people, especially anything automated.

My friend has the best number - 55555. I want it!
