Another mess at Dover

Postby Suff » 01 Apr 2023, 09:52

This time my ferry is at 11am and I'm stuck in the traffic. Looks like I'm in a hotel in France tonight before I get home. They are estimating 5-6 hours.

I think they need to start talking to to the Belgians about sailing to Oostende again.

However by a judicious application of queue manipulation I have managed to shave about 1.5 hours off the ordeal.

I have also blocked the road as I had to go to the travelodge to the toilet and the traffic decided to suddenly move. I lost about 30 minutes with that.

My queue allocation was on the basis of "if you have to ask the answer is sure to be no so don't ask".

Many years ago when I was still working took the car on the Shuttle a couple of times. Also went on coach tours on the ferry from Dover.
This was probably before the EU when you just shoed yur passport. No delays.justa few minutes as each car/coach was checked on at Dover or Calais.
Wouldn't go now.
Would use one of the other ports even though it is more expensive and longer crossing.
Suff, Hope you do not have a long wait.

Well the right window queue was moving less than half the speed of the left window queue to check in. As usual. As I drive alone I'm always in the right window queue.

Managed to get the 1:15 ferry, at 3:15. I managed an hours sleep on the ferry and that was enough to get me to Rouen, just.

I went to a hotel I know but as I was crossing the bridge to get to it I noticed the travellers camp within about 400m. I stopped and did a hotel search and was able to get another hotel of the same chain within an easy drive back out to the Autoroute. Another one on my list.

Back on the road today, tired and it is pretty windy but I'll make it home this afternoon.

Have a great day all.

Hope you’re well rested now Suff.

Tom’s school have taken a group of kids skiing to Italy. They left on Friday night and by last night (Sunday) had only made it to Germany, they weren’t expecting to get to the ski resort until late this afternoon. They’re due to start the journey home on Wednesday so are only going to get one full day’s skiing.

Tom said it’d cost £1200 each too, not sure how insurance will work seeing as it’s been affected by delays and not a full cancellation.
Awful for them all, it’s a popular time of year for school trips to Europe :(
