Ria, if she is a really good friend can you not find some other way to support her - a meal out now and then, invite her round more often, donations from your cabbage patch - I have too many tomatoes - you get the drift.

My mate, Andy, is having a rough time since his divorce many years ago and access to his children, but sometimes a pint at the quiz takes his mind off things for a while. Not perfect, but better than nowt.

Frank, she lives in Hove - so a good hour and a bit train ride away. Whenever we do meet up and we go out I always pay for us and when she comes to mine I always make sure I have 'extra' for her to take home.
Re her birthday - she just had a big one in December and between two friends and I we covered the cost of her meal plus her gift
