Why are some bottles so hard to open?

Postby Workingman » 14 Jul 2022, 21:27

Milk, water, fruit juices, pop, you name them

Some of them require the world's strongest grip.

Then there is no consistency. Get milk one day - easy. Next day - you need a torque wrench.

I have had to buy one of those universal bottle opener thingies.

And don't get me started on blister packs of pills.

We have to buy our water to drink and it comes in 6 litre bottles. Try taking those tops off

The top of the bottles twist and then, when you manage ot open it, the water goes everywhere

The reason the tops are on tight with a seal under the screw top is for security. If the seal is broken it mans the bottle has been tampered
and is not safe to use.

I have a device with lugs which can be adjusted to grip different sizez of bottle tops. There is also a bottle opener for beer bottles and a hook for
ring pulls on cans. It is made in Germany and is very good.

Also have a can opener from the same company. This braks the seal and you can then lift the top off the can with claws on the side of the can opener.
So you do not have to touch the lid, jusr grip the side of the can.

These devices sound interesting.
With very stubborn tops it's sometimes just a question of being able to get a proper grip on them. A tea towel or piece of kitchen roll will generally give you a better grip.
I have usually always been able to open the most stubborn top but now it appears I am getting arthritis in my hands, so I'm going to be needing one of these clever devices pretty soon, I think.

I often have to get E to open bottles for me. The ring pull gadget does help, but even that can be tricky at times. Goodness knows how I'd manage some things if I lived on my own.

Mrs S has two of the strap type wrenches. Put the strap round, turn the handle and it both locks the strap and provides force. Two because one is to hold the object and the other to go on the lid.

I'm finding some tops patently ridiculous. I develop close to 100kg of force in each hand and I have more in my arms. I'm struggling with some tops. I suspect it is a material change which is bonding rather than sealing but I have no evidence of that.

What I do not understand is that you can get two bottles of the same product from the same shelf and one is easy to open and the other is impossible - no matter with a tea towel or paper towel to help. I have a decent grip but even I need help.
