Not the email things, but those tins of the meat substitute for the poor and armies to survive on.

Sales have apparently risen for the seventh year in a row.

I remember mum doing Spam fritters with refried mashed potato, vegetables from the Sunday lunch and loads of gravy - also left over.

In the RAF the battered versions were on the menu about twice a month, but you could only get two at one serving.

Mind you they would not be cheap anymore at about £2.75 for a 340g tin.

Because of the cost we converted to "plopped ham with chalk" to feed the young ones. PEK, I think.

Funny how some things never die, even in these days of 24/7 "foodie" TV.

I’ve never tried it!
Quite odd really that I haven’t, growing up we had tinned ham, tinned salmon, Fray Bentos tinned pies….but never Spam

Yes, as Jan says, the smaller tins of 200g are ring-pull tops. I get a twin-pack for £3 in Iceland; it's a staple for lunchtime sandwiches along with corned beef.
Not keen on fritters, though.

Yuk, yuk, yuk, I hated it. My cousin on the other hand loves it and still buys it regularly.

Mum had three of us between the ages of eight and 14 to get fed before making something for her and dad, so fritters it was. Fish fingers and omelettes were other staples. It was only when she was doing things like Shepherd's pie, stews, braised steak or a big meat pie that we all ate the same food.

School dinners were our main meal, always something substantial with mash/boiled spuds and two veg; with a pudding or crumble and custard or semolina or rice pudding for afters. Never a chip, nugget, burger or pizza in sight in those days.
