Millie has found something she can eat with ease

Postby debih » 13 Apr 2013, 16:48

S and L are mad on squirty cream and have it with everything if the can get away with it.

Mick gave Millie some last week and now, every time Millie hears the familiar squirty sound from the can she comes running.

S has just had some on her chocolate muffin and Millie left her dinner to come and have some.

She can be lying in another room at the other end of the house (not that our house is Chatsworth or anything) and still hear that squirting noise.

  Well that will put some weight on her  Not too much though Debs, dairy isn't terribly good for dogs ;) Pepper loves cheese and, like Millie with the cream canister, comes running from any part of the house if we take it out of the fridge, but she only gets a tiny bit now and again

Tbh I just wouldn't ever give a dog anything like it, but still,
Minnie comes running for the sound of a carrot being grated, or a tuna tin being opened :)

It isn't something she would ever usually have but Mick gave her a bit and she loved it so much we decided that the odd smidgen now and again wouldn't hurt.

Since the stricture in her throat appeared she doesn't have any treats at all. She has her dog food smeared around her bowl and that's it. So she has gone from a dog that ate all our left overs to one that has a very boring diet now. She occasionally gets a small amount of grated cheese (and when I say small, I mean one piece from the grater) so I don't think a small squirt of cream a couple of times a week will hurt her.

I don't tend to cook chicken, etc for her as although her digestive system would cope with it fine I don't think it would smear around her bowl. She can't have anything that can lump together or stick in her throat as it just causes her to be sick still. She'll always be like that now.

The thing she has other than her dog food is natural yoghurt - she loves that! She doesn't have it every day as she doesn't need it now (it was used to settle her stomach) so she has a bowl a couple of times a week. She laps it up.

My main concern about her is her teeth as she no longer eats anything that she has to chew. Its the one thing I'm going to speak to Dan about when I next see him although I don't see any way around it as if she has to chew something there is the risk that she will swallow it when it is too big and then it will get stuck. I'm worried about her teeth.

And its nice to see her excited about food - she eats her meals but never seems all that interested in it. Its as though she's eating to exist rather than because she enjoys to eat.

Oh gosh Debih I wasn't criticising, I realised she only had a tiny bit and know how hard it is!
Tonight Minnie had about a 1/4" piece of a prawn cracker, which is all other than a little bit of carrot, that she's had for weeks apart from dog food. Even when she was ravenous we were careful not to just give her anything, because her stomach can't cope with it. The yoghurt was good for her stomach but she wasn't that keen, would lick a spoonful then leave it, even on the steroids.

I think you could probably cook some chicken, with rice, together in water (maybe with some carrot), then process the lot and it might come out the right texture. But only do a small amount to see if it worked.
Also, maybe we think it's boring but am not sure the dogs see it like that :)

No me neither Debih, sorry if it came across that way. It must be great to see Millie enjoying eating anything these days ((((((((x)))))))))

It's just not everyone is aware of the dairy thing, I wasn't for ages  xxxx

I know you weren't criticising. :D :D :D

The problem with the throat all started with her accident Ally but we aren't sure if the accident actually caused it or the anaesthetic. It was definitely caused by stomach acid - the first signs of it were when they found all the scars and ulcers on her throat when they first put a camera down (which was prompted by her being sick after most meals for 3 weeks. The vomitting started about 10 days after the accident).

The cause of the stomach acid is unknown though - it could have been the stress of the accident that caused it to start or it could have been the anaesthetic that she had when they operated - some dogs can react badly to anaesthetic.

But when it boils down to it, if she hadn't been hit by the car she wouldn't be in the position she is in now.

Ironically, the leg is fine.

Good to hear that Minnie is trying different things Di. :D

Millie loves yoghurt. She always has - she likes to lick out the yoghurt pots once the girls have finished with them and its a real treat for her now she has a whole pot of yoghurt for herself in the fridge each week.
