Ours just went up too, it's now £230 a month, and like you Jo we pay extra for garden waste

Kaz, ours will be £238 a month from April plus £57.50 for garden waste. :|

Dorset County Council will be the second highest charger in the country, according to a chart in the Daily Mail. The highest will apparently be Nottingham, and they are having to fund a £15.6m shortfall also.

Those who pay for garden waste, do you pay monthly along with your council tax or does it have to be paid in full?
We have to pay in full which has made it difficult for a number of people.

I must admit that we haven’t bothered signing up. We have such a small garden and our bin didn’t need emptying every fortnight, we could easily miss out two collections and still have space in it, and they don’t empty them at all for around six weeks in Dec and January.

In our case, it has to be paid in full before 5th April, Jo. We got a small discount (around £4) this year for a couple of missed collections back in April 2020 due to the lockdown and shortage of crews.

I never used to bother with garden waste collections in Birmingham because we were only a mile and a half from the big Sutton Coldfield recycling centre, so it was easy to take it down in bags in the boot of the car. Slightly different matter here as we're about 5 miles from our nearest council tip, Shaftesbury, and you can often spend 15-20 minutes queuing to get in. There's talk that the Shaftesbury tip will be relocated sometime to a modern facility to be built just outside our town, Gillingham, but that may be a few years off yet.

We have enough garden to fill up to 2/3rds of a bin with cut grass in the summer, and we regularly fill it completely in the autumn with shrub and bush prunings, so using the street collection makes reasonable sense for us.

Just two bins here - black and green. If you want a brown bin for garden waste you pay extra. Leeds stopped using landfill so anything in the black bin that is recyclable is filtered out and the rest burned to produce electricity. Brown bin waste is composted and used in council parks and flower beds. Green bin waste can be just about anything except for a few real baddies such as shredded paper and black food trays - they go in the black bin.

My one bed Band C flat would cost £116.65 per month but as I get the single person discount it falls to £87.49 per month. At just over £20 per week I think it is fair.

Ossie, we try and avoid the tip...on a couple of occasions it’s resulted in needing a new tyre.

Jo, I pay the garden waste bill online, when it arrives each year. Once it's paid they send a big sticker which needs to be displayed on the side. Without that it won't get emptied.
