Microwaves.....

Postby meriad » 30 Dec 2020, 17:28

do you have one or not...

if yes - how much do you use it and what for; and would you miss it if you didn't have one

if no - do you ever think you wished you did have one (and how do you do an emergency defrost of something or quick reheat) :D

Just pondering :)

You and your pondering.

I do have one but I have never "cooked" anything in it, well apart from single mugs of coffee. Defrosting and reheating are it's main tasks but I have to take the bread out first as it makes a great bread bin - the best on the market. :D It is not an essential but I would miss it.

I also have a worktop mini fan oven and grill and that gets used all the time, so much so that after five years it's on its last legs.

Ours is invaluable really, what with B working shifts. I can pop her meal in there, and it reheats beautifully without drying out. Mick has porridge and fruit every morning, and that cooks in the microwave, in three minutes. I part-cook jacket spuds in it, then finish off in the oven, and occasionally defrost in it, although I prefer to defrost naturally. Mine has automatic settings for defrost.

I very rarely use mine. Scrambled eggs or jacket spuds. I can't eat the skin (last hospital visit will testify   ) and Grumpy prefers softer skin. I'll defrost soup, if we decide we fancy one I've already made.

Apart from that, it's switched off.

Wouldn't be without it, an essential part of our cooking regime.

Mainly used to heat the contents of tins (beans, spaghetti, so on), done in around 3 1/2 minutes, and often in the bowl they'll be eaten out of, so less washing up!
Also used for heating frozen veg (we have a sort of 3-part steamer contraption that goes into the microwave), and occasionally for reheating liquids like cold coffee.

It's so simple even Ossie uses it (our oven cooker knobs are waaaay too complicated ....)
It does have some fancy settings, including one called "Chaos Defrost" which sounds vaguely sinister, but like Kaz we tend to defrost stuff overnight. We just use it as a basic piece of equipment.

It'll shortly be used to heat up the mulled wine (20 seconds!)

Pan Kaz, pan every time.

Although I don't eat them, too runny, but make them for Grumpy at least three times a week.

I use mine most days, porridge, hot milk for coffee, scrambled eggs, frozen peas and so on. Wouldn't want to be without it.
