But all is not lost Saundra, and others, have you thought about getting a snood / neckwarmer?

They sit round you neck like a scarf but can be pulled up over your nose like a mask and do the same job. They are acceptable as a face covering but are a lot easier to wear than a paper or cotton mask I had two for wearing on the motorbike and dug them out last week and they are fine.

We are not allowed in any shop etc without a mask and for us, it's quite normal. Don't like it, but hey ho. Some people wear them all the time, outside, walking the dog etc, but it's only mandatory in shops, library etc at the moment.

And try wearing one when it's 45C - waiting for the chemist to open and there is no shade. Not pleasant. But better that than catching the virus.

Masks protect others from your breath, they don't protect the wearer. You need almost everyone to wear one, to protect those that really can't - a bit like how vaccines work. That's the theory, anyway.

Having said that Doreen says she will wear one, and she has COPD.

More than half the people here, locally in our remote French town, don't wear masks for shopping and that number is going down in the locals.

Even shop staff are starting to ditch them in certain shops.

The new tourists on Holiday are almost all wearing masks.

French infections and deaths continue downwards. So people are not overly concerned.

On the other hand a good French friend of ours has just spent 3 days in hospital with a raging kidney infection. She looks like she has lost a stone in weight and she didn't need to lose any. She is in her mid 80's.

Masks protect others from your breath, they don't protect the wearer. You need almost everyone to wear one, to protect those that really can't - a bit like how vaccines work. That's the theory, anyway.

That certainly is one of a number of similar theories and the majority of the research into face coverings I have seen, not just masks, does back it up; not all, but the majority. It is almost certainly the case at close quarters or enclosed spaces but then come the mixed messages.

Wear one on a visit to a shop or on a bus even though the staff and the driver do not have to. No need for one in the office even though there is plenty of evidence that air circulation systems move the virus around. No need for them when you meet up in your bubbles because we all know that bubbles are impermeable. Go to a pub or restaurant but only whisper as the droplets can travel round the perspex screen between you and the next table.

I have given up applying any logic to this thing any more and just do as I am told.

Typical that just after I post the politicians in Paris start to panic over a small bubble of cases in Paris.

It is dropping already but we are all to be forced back into masks in the shops again.

That's it for Mrs S as her Claustrophobia won't allow her to wear a mask, so shopping is down to me again.
