As a former print apprentice I know what a proper dingbat is. It is a space filler for the tops, bottoms and sides of a page for things like poems, hymns, tables and things. They were usually little pictograms that could be turned any which way to make bigger and bigger versions similar to fractals.

What the word "DINGBATS" in white lettering on a black oblong means is anybody's guess. :o
