A lot of people in my trade started re training as plumbers back in 2002 when they could not get jobs. As much for the money as anything else.

This is not an expensive quote for bathroom work. One of the reasons that I do my own work. If I had brought in a builder to do the work for my house in France it would probably have cost €100,000 and that for a house which cost €32,000 and would probably sell for €120,000 right now.

Jobbing tradesmen are one of the best value ways of getting work done nowadays but you really DO have to take references on previous work.

I've told my boys that if they want to make good money, get a trade
When I look around our close, the people with the biggest houses are the electricians, the carpenter and the train driver...

Tommy was at Batley Varieties.

Bob Monkhouse was on a few weeks later... I have never laughed so much. Totally different from his TV persona.

You won't want to know how much ours cost 4 years ago then   Mind you, it did involve knocking down a wall, stripping walls and ceilings back to the basic and relining with insulation, and a new floor AND we didn't go mad on the fittings either.

Depends what's included in that quote. I had a local builder do a complete refit for my bathroom to include replastering ceiling with flush lighting, tiling and mosaic on walls, new flooring, two wall mirrors, heated towel rail/radiator (retro one that was priced at £600.00 but ex-showroom for £300.00) window blinds, vanity unit, all accessory fittings, painting and white three piece bathroom suite. He project managed all the skills from local tradesmen, lining them up day by day and it was completed in one week with no pain and for around the same figure as you've been quoted.

I used the same builder to organise my new galley kitchen with the same excellent result and completed in just over one week.

The hardest bit doing it on your own is getting the tradespeople to co-ordinate and follow through in the right order otherwise things just drag on and on. Understandably they say yes to all the jobs they can whereas a local builder has a pool of skilled people he can call on and if one can't do it then another one can.

After a month my builder came back to see if I was happy with everything and prepared to see to any snagging whereas using individuals can be a problem getting them back in on your own. I know this from past experiences!

We were quoted $17,000 to do our bathroom. Just over 8600 pounds.
Needless to say we did it ourselves.
