'Harmful' gender stereotypes in ads to be banned.

Postby Workingman » 14 Jun 2019, 11:40

Oh goody, that will solve all the world's problems.

I am so looking forward to seeing Andy the builder applying his pro-vit, hyaluronic acid enhanced hand cream and Jenny the recovery mechanic fixing all those broken down cars driven by men.

They will fit right in with all the multi-culti family and friends ads in this ever increasingly virtue signalling world we are living in.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, schools, roads, hospitals, health care, transport, and many other things need urgently fixing. It is beyond time we got our priorities right.

Tell you what, I am glad that I am not a woman.

The pressure applied to them to go out and buy this or that expensive lotion or potion is incessant. As is the demand for them to use this new colour (nails, hair, skin) and this new style otherwise they will not be attractive. The most insidious of this comes from the beauty and ladies mags industries and it is 100% aimed at women and young girls. Harmful stereotyping?

And all the while this is going on there is an increase in women and girls committing self-harm / suicide due to body image worries, yet little or nothing is done to curtail the beauty propaganda.

You're spot on Frank. I'd like to consider myself very lucky in that I really don't give a flying toss... my hair is cut 4x a year by my friends mom, I buy cheap facial /beauty products (Sainsbury's own brand because not only absolutely nothing wrong with it, but my main criteria for anything is it's cruelty free). Most of my clothing is ancient... and I'm happy. I'm super content with what and who I am and really don't care what others think or don't think. But I know so many people who as you say are constantly worrying about how they look, what they're wearing; can they keep up with the latest trends; etc. My ex colleague spends a small fortune to fix flaws she thinks she has - she's perfect as is but as far as she's concerned there are so many things wrong with her skin that need covering up.

As for all this political correct advertising etc... you're so right; let's fix things that really need fixing. Society will always do what it wants

It would be nice to get some actual names for this insanity. Who thinks that "gender stereotypes" are harmful? Who is pushing this fruitcake agenda?
If you look at the ads, every relationship is mixed race, which is a million miles from the truth. It's a world that doesn't exist and it's now going to be made even more unrealistic.
Bring back the Esso blue adverts, that's what I say.

We're regularly in the company of two very pretty young women, Shannon and Amanda, Tom and Joe's girlfriends. I've never seen Amanda wear make up and she has the clearest skin (even first thing this morning after a couple of hours sleep and a night of clubbing she looked amazing) and I hope she never conforms to what is expected of girls her age, the thickly applied perfect make up and Sharpied eyebrow. Shannon on the other hand is very insecure about how she looks but I don't think she realises how lucky she is. She has that lovely combination of pale skin and dark hair, yet she wears a lot of make up and I really do believe that she uses it as a mask to hide behind. I always complement her, honestly, if I see her before she's got ready when she has no make up on; she really doesn't need to wear it and looks lovely without.

There's far too much pressure on people now to look perfect. Not only do we have magazines selling products with stick thin models showing us how we should look but we're also up against the tiniest of perceived imperfections being Photoshopped out.

That does baffle me Jo. Lovely young girls stressing about this or that aspect of their looks when there is no reason.
Some teenage girls around here are having lip fillers.
How is this pressure put on young girls?

Adverts, magazines, (un)social media, peer pressure....?

I remember a makeover programme where the women looked hideous yet they thought that they were "Gore-jouws"; as Cheryl would say. Yet after an hour's sand-blasting and a good dunk in an acid bath more than a few of them turned out to be damned gorgeous - in the real sense.

And isn't it strange that the only people needing to go on a diet - now, urgently - are women. There are next to no diets or products aimed at lardy lads. Now that's what I call stereotyping.
